1000 buses excess in KSRTC: Thachankary

Kollam: KSRTC Managing Director Tomin J Thachankary stated that over 1000 buses are excess in KSRTC. He was responding to the news in Mathrubhumi on KSRTC purchasing only 100 buses within two years.

“Over 1000 buses are not used for conducting services due to shortage of staff and limited number of service schedules. Rather than purchasing more buses, KSRTC aims to use the existing bus for service,” he added.

He noted that KSRTC is unable to carry out service even for 10 hours. An ordinary bus causes an average loss of Rs 7000.

At present, KSRTC has large number of buses under possession after extending the expiry period of super class buses from five years to seven years. These buses can be used for 15 years.

“At present KSRTC owns buses which are only 13 years old. Hence, buses would not be decommissioned for next 2 years,” said KSRTC MD.

When the expiry period of super class buses were raised, KSRTC got 700 more super class buses. Apart from this, KSRTC has invited tender for 10 eco-friendly electric buses as per the government order.
