Chekannur Maulavi murder case: HC acquits first accused

Kochi: The Kerala High Court acquitted the first accused in Chekannur Maulavi murder case. P. V. Hamza, the first accused in the case, was earlier given a double life sentence by the CBI Special Court in Kochi. The Chekannur Maulavi murder case is more than 25 years old. Among the nine accused in the case, eight were already acquitted by the court. Hamza was awarded double life sentence by the CBI Special Court in 2010. The acquittal verdict was based on the corpus delicti principle. As per the principle, if a person is murdered, either the body or evidences to prove the murder have to be found out in order to charge murder case against the accused. The court observed that the investigation team failed to obtain the evidence to prove the same.
