Kerala HC grants bail to Franco Mulakkal

Kochi: Bishop Franco Mulakkal, accused in the nun abuse case, was granted conditional bail by the Kerala High Court. The bail was granted on the basis of a few criteria. He was instructed by the court not to enter Kerala. He was also asked to submit the passport in the court. He has to be present before the investigating officer in an interval of two weeks. He must not try to influence the witnesses.

Today, prosecution didn’t express much disagreement on granting bail to Franco. However, it demanded that he must be granted bail on strict conditions. The court has accepted the demands.

If Franco is found to violate any of the conditions, the prosecution can proceed with further action. The procedures for release from the jail have already begun by his advocate and relatives.

The bishop moved the high court after a magistrate’s court in Pala rejected his bail application, in which he said he had been implicated for taking action against the nun.

He is currently under judicial remand in a sub-jail in Pala in Kottayam district.

In June, the nun had complained to the police that Mulakkal, had abused her 13 times between 2014 and 2016. The nun is a member of the Missionaries of Jesus congregation based in Punjab which runs three convents in Kerala.
